3. Can we determine the diversity of tardigrades living on the lichen in our study site?

These research focus questions are intended to give directions to your study of atmospheric levels of sulphur dioxide and its' impact on lichen coverage. Tardigrades live on and eat the lichens, so we are also interested to see if the effect of SO₂ on lichens also moves down the food chain. At this point we are trying to develop a deep understanding of these relationships, if relationships exist. The role of SO₂ on the lichens and the living community dependent on them, are important issues.

Working to answer the focus questions, combined with the background information provided and information that you develop on your own, you should have a rich understanding of atmospheric sulphur dioxide, lichens, and tardigrades.
